What is IEC Registration?

IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is a 10-digit unique identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It is the primary document required for any person or entity engaged in the import or export of goods and services from India.

Without a valid IEC, customs authorities will not permit clearance of imported goods, and banks will not process foreign exchange transactions for export proceeds. IEC is also required for availing benefits under various Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) schemes such as SEIS, Advance Authorisation, and EPCG.

IEC registration is a one-time process with no renewal requirement. However, it must be updated annually on the DGFT portal to keep it active. The registration is linked to the PAN of the applicant and is valid for a lifetime.

Mandatory for Trade

Required for all importers and exporters — no customs clearance without a valid IEC.

Lifetime Validity

IEC is valid for a lifetime with no renewal fee — only annual update on DGFT portal required.

FTP Scheme Benefits

Required to claim benefits under SEIS, Advance Authorisation, EPCG, and other Foreign Trade Policy schemes.

Bank Transactions

Banks require IEC for processing foreign exchange transactions related to exports.

E-Commerce Exports

Mandatory for e-commerce sellers exporting goods to international customers.

Service Exports

Service exporters claiming FTP benefits must also obtain IEC registration.
